There are services that will allow you to enter a long URL and they convert it to a link that uses their domain name and a random series of characters such as tinyurl.com/ei9lb?m

OK, that makes it short. But it doesn't show your domain name so you are not connected to the link by just looking at it.

And you get no idea from the link about where that link will take you.

But, more than that, the link conversion happens on thier servers where you have no control. You just have to believe that it will be handled properly. In most cases, everything works fine. But I like having the control, myself. That's why I recommend using a script.
